GREAT NORTHERN STEEPLECHASE MEETING. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, May 26. The following handicaps bave been declared by Mr J. Evett for the events to bo run at the North New Zealand Grand National Meeting : — Winter Welter Handicap, 1 mile.
A fair amount of wagering is being transacted over the Grand National Hurdle Race and the Great Northern Steeplechase. Miss Nelson is a firm favorite at 100 to 6. The parties connected with the daughter of Nelson have, it is understood, backed her to win about .41000. During the past few days Annabclle has also been in strong request for the Grand National Hurdles, and has received good support in connection with several horses in the Steeplechase. There have also been inquiries for Ilex, who has been supported in conjunction with Miss Nelson and The Friar to win £500. Following are the prices on offer : — Grand National Hurdle Eace —4 to 1 agst Miss Nelson and Annabelle, 5 to 1 Dummy, 8 to 1 St. Simon, 8 to 1 Prince Chavlie. The racehorses Sam sad Dromedary have arrived to fulfil their engagements.
(Per Press Association.) Christciibkuii, May 27. The annual meeting of tbe Canterbury Jockey Club was held to day. The baK ancc sheet showing receipts i' 21,171 ar>d expenditure £20,401 was adopted. The Hon. F. W. Parker, chairman, remarked that the receipts were more than in any previous year. Ho complimented the handicapper ou the success of his work duriug the year. London, May 26. Vosuvian, who has been secend favorite for tbe Derby, has been scratched for the ovent. Melbourne, May 27. Carlton, winner of the Newmarket Haudicap, has been shipped to India. Adelaide, May 27. Ou arrival of the mail steamer Oroya, the services of a veterinary surgeon had to be obtained for Newhaven, who was suffering from the effects of the rough sea, and refused to eat. He was improyinu when the steamer sailed.
