Temperance Convention.
The fourth annual Convention of delegates representing the Temp: rauco Societies aud Churches of the Wellington, Hawke's Bay and Taraualu districts opened in the Presbyterian Hall, Palrnerstoo, last Monday. Among the delegates present, were the following : — i Rev J. Doull, (Bulls), Rev D. Martin, ' Messrs Stone and Crawford (Huntcrville) Reva G, GriDdlcy and A. Blake, Mrs ]3!al;e (M.ilcomhe), Rev J. Cocker, Rev F. Stubbs Mrs Stubbs, Messrs Shearer, Greenwood, Watson, J. C. Thompson, Mrs Thompson, Mrs F. Y. Letbbridge, [ Mrs Greenwood, Capt MacCallum, Miss i Sears (Ft-ihliug), Messrs Dick, Watson, j Guy, aud Buckman (Apiti), Mr H. Sansou tßongotea), Mrs Fagan, Mr H. J. ! Hdwater (Sandon), Mr J. Dixon, Miss I Dixou, Mr Smith (liuunytliorpe). Thirty Churches and nicety-seven Societies were represented at the Convention. Mr A. H Atkinson moved, That this Council is of opinion that the local option poll should not bo taken simuK I taneonsly with the general election. Seconded by Rev F, W. Isitt and npoken to by Messrs Pirani, Anderson, Harkness, Gaio, T. E. Taylor. Sir R. Stout, Miss Powell, Rev Gordon. Fia ucll, Piousc, Mr- 0.-tler, Crahb, Green wood, Bridge, Judkius, Grace and Cocker. The motion was carried by C 6 votes to ;53. Mr Aitkeu (Wauganui) moved, That this Couucil reuews its demand from Parliament for (a) Colonial option poll ; (b) Decision of issues by majority ; (c) Inclusion of clubs in the option vote ; (d) Nationalisation of licentiug revenue. Seconded by Rev D. Gordon and .spoken to by Messrs Bridge, Harkness, Pirani, Crabb. Field, Hutcliings, Rev Cocker, Anderson, Grace, Rev Doull, Roy F. Stnhbs. The motion was carried, an amendment to strike out clause b beiig lost by a very large majority. Mr Atkiusou moved, That this Council is of opinion that the proposal for reduction shculct be deleted from the local option ballot paper, and (failing the carrying of no license at the local option poll) adequate provision lie made by vesting iv the licensing committee absolute discretion to reduce licenses up to 25 per cent., leaviug the- electors to elect committees pledgee! to definite reduction, as t'::cy may deem expedient. — Carried. — Times. iPar Press Association.) Palme rstox North, May 25. At to day's sitting of the Temperance Convection the following resolutions were carried: — " That ever} 1 church he urged to observe two Temperance Sundays every year, aud that the executive be asked to giye (ffect to this resolution." ■' That the Convention record its deep seuso of the loss sustained by the Temperance party through the death of the Rev P. R. Monro, and their sincere sym pa thy be offered to Mrs Monro and family." " That the Minister of Education be urged to allow temperance to be taught in the public schools, aud that Taylor's book on alcohol be added to the list of books used iv the public schools." A committee was appoiuted to draw up a scheme to make the New Zealand Alliaucc Executive a truly representative body. A number of recommendations were made to the New Zealand AllianceThe members of the convention were entertained at dinner to»day.
