The Ciptdin of the former vessel ordered "full speed astern" almost instantly. The steamer Waitangi passed within a few feut of tbc Victoria's bow. Had not the Car.taiu and Eugiueer displayed gj£at promptitude the ferry steamer would have been cut in two. The Victoria bad several hundred passengers uu boavd.
