Railway Returns.
The return of Railway reoeipta and ex* penditure for the four weeks ending 31at March shows tha receipta to hare been £123,699 6b 2d, and the expenditure £84,337 14s Id. In the corresponding period of the previous year the figurea were £121,120 4a lid and £72,526 18s 7d resptctively. Of tha revenue for the four weeks ending the 21at March laet the North Island lines contributed £45,321, 12 i 7d, as against £45,589 4s 2d and the Middle Island lines £78,467 12s 7d, as against £75,581 Os 9d. The North Island lines absorbed of the expenditure £37,102 16s Id, as again»t £28,941 111 lOd, and the Middle Island lines £47,234 18s Od, as against £43,585 6s 9d. The proportion of expenses to revenue on the several lines, calculated on an annnal average for the respective periods of 1897-96, was as follows :— North Island— Eawakawa, 11111, 81-91; Whangarei, 86-19, 82-11 ; Kaihu, 4352, 51-58: Auckland, 6111, 67*14; Napier-Taranaki, 67-77, 6454; Welliugton, 58-91, 59-91; Middle Island — Hurunui-Bluff 59-27, 63-23; Grey mouth- Brunner, 59*27, 49-83 ; Greymouth - Hokitika, 52*35, 51-71 ; Westport, 45 22, 48 59; Nelson, 95-61, 88-98; Picton, 100-23, 120 57. The rex ceipts on the Wellington section lor the four weeks ending the 31st March were £9549 7s Id, as Bgainot £8553 10s 8d in the corresponding period last year, and the nmaber of pas»engers carried wa» 89,197, as against 38,591.
