o (Per Press Association.) Wellington, May 6. The Gazette notifies that William Jakes Steward, George Fisher, and Edward Tregear hare been appointed commissioners for the purpose of inquiring into the working of private benefit societies ; the relations existing between employers and their employees in connection with such societies and the expediency, or otherwise, of bringing snch society under Legislative control. The following volunteer officers are appointed :— Lieut. Grant to be captain, unattached. N.Z. Volunteers; Lieut. Nicholls, to be captain North Otago Rifles ; H L Bourn, to be lientenont " C " Battery ; G D Ross, to be lieutenant Dunedin Engineers ; W F Walters to be lieutenant Bruce Rifles. July 7th is gazetted Arbor Day for the colony.
