Halcombe Notes.
[from our own correspondent.] Despite the severity of the recent floods, Halcombe still stands in its place and has really not suffered any damage at all. On the contrary it has Bince presented quite a busy appearance, coaches and all kinds of vehicles running through the town on their way to the Rangitikei river. There is some talk of making a traffic bridge alongside the railway bridge, instead of re-erecting the Onepuhi bridge. There can be no doubt as to the advantage to nearly everybody on both sides of the river here in making the bridge at Kakariki while the township of Halcombe would be benefitted considerably. A case of wanton cruelty to animals occurred on the SandonHalcombe road the other evening, A big draught horse which refused to pull in the shafts had a chain put round it's neck and two horses yoked on to it with the result that its neck was eithet dislocated or broken. At auy rate it was left ou the middle of the road in a dying condition and was eventually killed and shifted out of the road on the following morning.
