RAINING AGAIN IN HASTINGS. i (Per Press Association.) Napier, April 22. Gisborne has sent its first donation of £125. j Mr Coleman and family has given | £200; Speight, Dunedin, £50; Union s.s. Co., £100 and offers to carry produce ; for sufferers free ; Robjohns, Hindmarsh and Co., £60; H. J. Smith, £50, and many others from 4;10 to i-25. It is again raining heavily at Hastings. Trains are now running botween Hastings and Farndon, aud the line south is expected to be sufficiently renovated to allow through traffic to Wellington by the middle of next month. At a public meeting held to day, the Mayor said the latest estimate of loss was at least £150,000. The amount subscribed up to date was over £1000. A proposal to divert £250 of the amount subscribed for the Indian Famine Relief Fund was unanimously negatived. A deputation, representing all the local bodies, waited on the Hon HallJones this morning, and explained the full position, pointing out the necessity for urgent action on the part of the Government. The Minister, in reply, said he would impress on hia colleagues the necessity of pushing on the work of re opening railway communication. He eulogised the officers of the department for the energy displayed by them in the emergency.
