Fatal Accident.

At about 8.30 this morning a young man, 18 years of age, named Peter Lassen the son of Mr Lassen, a settler residing at Bunnyfchorpe, was accidentally killed at the Aorangi bridge. It appears young Lassen had taken a dray with two horsea attached, up the Oroua river for the pur pose of carting metal, being accompanied by his father who was on horseback. The deceased drove the horses about half way down the tipproach to the river bed, on the Feilding side of the river, where he tied the horses up, going with his father to search for the best locality to secure the metal. On finding it the deceased went back to get the dray and his father's attention- was attracted by a noise. On ascertaining the cause the latter found that the dray was capsized with his eon underneath. By some means the horses had turned round, whether before or after deceased went to get them can only be surmised as the father's view was obscured by the ein. bankment which was between where he was and the team, and in coining out of the narrow approach to the river bed the dray evidently collided with the first post of the fence protecting the approach to the bridge, and capsized, the deceased being thrown underneath. The horses evidently dragged the dray a short distance while in this position. The deceased must have been killed instantaneously as his neck and right shoulder were found to be broken when examined by Ds Johnston. The remain aof the unfortunate young man were removed irom the spot where the accident occurred, to big father's residence at Bunnythorpe where an inquest will be held to-morrow.
