The Feilding Star, OROUA & kIWITEA COUNTIES GAZETTE. Published Daily. MONDAY, APRIL 5, 1897.

OUR EXPORTS. [t would appear that the Ajjent--ffineral for the colodv in London is van™ good work in the direction of i rawing public attention to the value uf our exports in the principal centres. he London correspondent of the Dunedin Star under date of February 19th says : — The Agent General's visit to Glasgow last week seems to have convinced him that the day is not far distant when the centre of Scotland's commercial activity will possess cold storage for meat and dairy produce, and he is not slow to express his opinion that New Zealanders ought <ti once to face the question of direct shipment to that city if they desire to share with Canada, Australia, and the Plate the benefits of the very considerable market there for mutton, butter, and cheese. We may take it for granted that once cold stores are established on the Clyde, the Plate exporters and Canadian shippers will ship direct to Glasgow, and Australia will most probably be placed in direct communications through the the Gulf line. Against such competition New Zealand, trading via Loudon, could have no show whatever for the railway rate from the capital to Glasgow is about 45s per ton, and the prospects of any radical reduction iv the charge are noc worth thinking about. The problem, then, to be solved is how to place New Zealand in direct and regular communication with Glasgow, and it is not ono to be solved of!" h ir.d. Still one may venture to sugy(^t a solution. New Zea land should, if possible, ship produce j direct also to Cardiff" and Liverpool, I and ifc seems to me that it might be feasible to kill thrpe birds with oue J stone by instituting a monthly ser- ;

vice of cargo steamers to run between the colony and these West Coast ports. There is sound common sense and business enterprise indicated in the above, and the suggestions made, with perhaps a few slight modifications to suit local circumstances, could be easily adopted.
