♦ NEWHAVEN'S WITHDRAWAL FROM THE SYDNEY CUP. (Per Press Association.) Melbourne, April 4. There being no other explanation forthcoming, the Age says that Mr Cooper's idea in scratching Newbaven for the Sydney Cup was no doubt that he considered the horse too valuable to run the risk of an accident in a big field, and it may be regarded as a significant indication that Mr Cooper has high hopes of Newbaven earning distinction in England. The paper adds that Mr Cooper is apparently very sensitive about the champion being beaten, and may be bis defeat in the St. Leger Stakes had something to do with his withdrawal from the Cup. (Per Press Association) Hawera, This Day. A meeting of the Normanby Trotting Club was held on Saturday night. John Anderson, Eltham, owner of the trotting horse Thunderbolt which ran second in the Waibi Harness Handicap at the recent meeting was disqualified for 12 months foe omission in entry. According to the evidence Thunderbolt was identical with Schoolboy who won at the Greymouth Trotting Club on the 19fch of March. ________________
