A petition signed by seventy-six ratepayers was presented by Mr Thomas, on behalf of a deputation, requesting the re-consideration and re-arrangement of the boundaries of the proposed new .subdivision, to enable other sections on the Pohangina being included in the new ward. Messrs G. S. Rumble and E. Gallichan waited on the Board in support of the petition and pointed out that the ratepayers of Ashurst and those on the Pohangina road signing the petition were desirous of: being formed into one ward as it would be a r more reasonable division than that i proposed. The Ashurst township and suburbs rating valuation returned 1 £112 and included thirteen miles of road. If their wishes were acceded to they would then be enabled to work better with the Pohangina settlers in getting a bridge accross the Pohangina, which would make a material difference to Ashurst. They agreed to find £5 of the cost of commencing the proceedings denovo and including , the sections as requested. Members of the Board pointed out the expense it would be to commence the proceedings over again for the '■ purpose of including other sections : aud wore averse to the proposal. Be--1 even if acceded to there might still be dissatisfaction. In the event ■ of the proposed No, 7 ward desiring , to construct a bridge across the i Pohangina they could form a special district without regard to the boundaries of a ward. There were no ward accounts the money being spent where it was considered most desirable. The chairman thought it would be better for the deputation to accept the boundaries as defined and they would have a member at the next meeting, whereas if they did not they would be without a representative for this year. They could extend the boundaries at some future time if they desired. Wardens Thomas and Pearce thought there was no objection beyond the expense to acceding to the wishes of the ratepayers. After a desnltory discuosion, the special order was confirmed defining the boundaries of the new subdivision, to be known as No. 7 ward, of the Board, the order to come into force on April 20th. Resolved, That Mr Purkiss be treasurer for this meeting. Resolved, That the action of the warden for No. 2 ward in letting contract for forming Sherwill street Halcombe to G. Kiuger at 6s 6d per chain be approved of. A special order was mado with reference to striking a special rate to cover interest on loan of £300 for repairs to Onepuhi bridge. Mr Gardiner waited on the Board in connection with the gates erected by Mr Cotter across road-line, which he thought were not erected in accordance with the intention and instructions of the Board and should bo removed. Proposed by Mr Thomas and seconded by Mr Purkiss, That Mr Pearce the chairman and mover ofc this motion be a deputation to inspect the road through Mr Cotter's property and report at the next monthly meeting. —Carried. Resolved, That it is the intention of the Manchester Road Board under the Rating Act, 1894, to make a general rate of 5 Bths of a penny in the £ on the whole of the rateable property within the Manchester Road district for the year ending 31st March, 1898, such rate to become payable on and after May Ist at the Board's office Feiiding.
