The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. FRIDAY MARCH 19, 1897. WAR NEWS.

Tin-; war news which we have received during the last few dnys is, taking it | altogether, very disquieting. The ' people of Greece have taken up a position toward the Great Powers which is, to say the least of it, as untenable as .surprising when we consider the insignificance of tiaat nation. The only inference to be drawn is that J the Government has reason to hope ] for outside help when the hour of need comes. It is well known that Greece has powerlul sympathizers both in France and England, not the least of whom is the Hon. W. E Gladstone who has spoken in no uncertain language his opinion. England has taken further action and ordered a battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders, one of the best regiments in the service, to proceed from Malta to Crete, where they will be employed in the preservation of o»"der, and the suppression or prevention of the retaliatory massaci'es perpetrated on each other by the Moslems and the Christians. One of the most ridiculous incidents connected with the affair was the King of Greece ordering his two gun boats to resist eicpulsi<ja from Cretan waters by the war ships of the Powers. We have not heard of anything yet, but we have no fears for the safety of any of Her Majesty's ships. One thing is certain and that is that England has no present iutsiition of being dragged into a war with any other European Power. The only danger to be dreaded in that connection is some untoward and unforseen accident. It is evident that European statesmen are desirous of prewnticg » declaration of war between Greece and Turkey, and to secure that end are using the only means at their disposal of any utility witb the Turks or the Greeks : — force and coercion. Whether U\ose will meet with the success hoped Son teauujps to t'e seen. - i
