Feilding Borough Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Feilding Borough Council was held last evening. Present— The Mayor (Mr W. A. L. Bailey), Crs W. Reid, W. O. Shearer, G. W. Fowles, P. Thomson, J. Gonld. " Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows : — From H. Penberthy, requesting that part of rates of section 160 be remitted as the house thereon had not been occupied for nearly twelve months. From G. Thomas, urging the Council to metal Arnott street before winter. From Finance Committee, iecom* mending accounts amounting to £92 be passed for payment. — Adopted. From J. H. Stevens, chairman Library Committee, requesting the Council to permit access to the magazine room , from the front entrance of the buildings and offering to provide the lighting in the vestibule. From W. Reid and H. P. Mai, requesting change of names on rate roll for section 164, Makino, from latter to former.— Agreed to. From M. J. E. Woollama and five others, requesting the Council to metal the newly-formed portion of West Street. From T. Median and twelve others, requesting that the ditch in yueen Street be filled up and a watertable constructed. From C. H. Hodges and C. Roe, requesting change of names on rate roll from latter to former for section 504. — Agreed to. From Treasury, voucher for jEI3S subsidy due to Council on rates. From F. Flarall and A. E. Ratliff, requesting change of names on rata roll from latter to former for section 85. Application informal. From Land and Income Tax Department, stating the rates for the year 18S7---98 could not be collected on the valuation dow in preparation. From T. Watson, Returning Officer Rangitikei electorate, stating the poll for the licensing committee would be held on Wednesday 24th or Thursday 25th insts, and stating he would be glad to confer with the Mayor on the subjeot ; alio, that he estimated the cost at £80. He suggested that the cumber of polling booths be 18 in place of 28 as at the general election. From A. Lain?, applying for a carrier's license for a spring waggon.— Granted. Trom A. H. Truebridge requesting that the road to the section on which the eau works are to be erected be made as soon as poasible. From R. R, Collins and United Farmers Association requesting Council to asphalt footpath in front of their premises and agreeing to pay half cost. From £. Giesen, manager Colonists L. and Loan Corporation, re oil painting of late General Feilding and stating he had sent it to Municipal Building. From H, Mowlem, secretary Palmerston N. Tradesmen and Manufacturers, a circular requesting the co operation of tradesmen and others in the direction of bringing pressure to bear to prevent the Government and Government officials importing goods free of duty and selling them in competition with those on which duty is paid. — Petition handed to Cr Thomson, who consented to get the signatures of business man in the town. From W. A. Sandilands requesting permission to erect style opposite his residence.— Granted. Resolved, That the request of the Library Committee for the use of the front entrance of Municipal Chambers after office hours be granted. Proposed by Cr Shearer, seconded by Cr Thomson, That tenders be called for metalling ArnoU and West streets ; tenders to be in by next meeting of the Council. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Fowles, seconded by Cr Reid, That the Farmers Alliance and others requiring asphalt footpaths be in formed that if they like to get the work done to the satisfaction of the Cenncil's inspector the Council will pay half the cost ; cost not to exceed 3s 3d per yard super, when in funds.— Carried. Resolved, That the filling-in of the ditch in Queen street bo referred to the Public Works Committee to report at next meeting. Resolved, That th« request of Henry Penbcrtby to bo relieved of part of the rates for section 160, Makino road, under the Rating Act ; such house having been unoccupied for more than six months in 1806, be granted. Resolved, That leave of absence be granted to Crs Saywell and Haybittle for tbis meeting. Resolved, That this Council vote the sum of £80 to meet the expanses of the licensing poll. Tha following tenders were received : —For metalling 37 chains Weld and Bowen street -E. Charles, 18s Od per chain (accepted) ; G. Merritt, 19s 8d ; Jos. Belfit, 35s 6d. Removal of bell tower from present sit* in Manchester Square to Court House section — W. Heald £9 10s (accepted) ; H. H. L. Bilderbeck, £19s 10s.
