Ashurst Notes
-+ (From Our Own Correspondent.) The vital statistics for the district of Ashurst for the month of January were: Births, 9 ; deaths, 1 ; marriages, 1. The Helping Hand Lodge of the 1.0. G.T. has been resuscitated. Great damage bas been sustained by the settlers along the Pohangina valley through tbe late flood. Traffic over the Lower Gorge ferry was suspended for two or three days. A very good view of the eclipse of the sun was observed here. Several persons are looking for a young gentleman who has a land purchasing mania and forgets to pay his board. On Thursday morning one of the old corporation cottages situated in Stamford street, the property of Mr Millen of Colyton, was burned down. The cause of the fire is unknown. It had been empty for some time. On Wednesday afternoon as a Pohanpina settler, accompanied by a young lady, was driving home from Palmerston, the horse took fright at two large tanks which stood on the roadside near the railway station and bolted, upset, ting the sulky, which left the lady and gent in a very undignified position. The horse then continued its mad career, scattering pieces of the sulky along tbe road until it reached the Manawatu river, when all traces of it were lost. Lnckily, the lady and gent escaped with a few braises. At a meetiug of the Schp.ol Committee pn Wednesday Messrs Baker, Bridge, and Sauson were voted for as members of the Education Board.
