The Napoleon of Africa.
ATTEMPT ON RHODES' LIFE. (Per Mail Steamer.) A plot to wreck Cecil Rhodes' train on its way from the North (according to a cable from Capetown of January 12) was discovered and extraordinary precautions were in consequence taken to thwart the plotters. Seven detectives who were put on the case have been shadowing three Germans from the Transyaal. Rumour connects the same men with (he burning of Rhodes' country house. The country is wild for Rhodes, and there have been torchlight precessions and general rejoicing at Capetown. The Cape Dutch are also loyal to him. These honors and ovations have greatly annoyed people of the Transvaal. When Judge Jorrisen and party called upon President Eruger to pay him New Year compliments, the former made a epeeeh complaining bitterly of the manner Bhodes had been honored, and said : — " Rhodes was un- 1 donbtedly the chief criminal in the despicable assaults uoon our country."
