JANUARY WEATHER, 1897.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — The heavy and grateful rain which fell daring tho day and night of Friday last, the 29th of the past month, measured 205 inches, the heaviest fall in one day since Bth January, 1896, when 207 inches were registered. The total fall during the month was 4-00 inches, the whole of which with a very trifling exception fell during the last half of tbe month. The barometer which on tho 29th stood at 29 90, fell to 29-68 on the 30th, but rose to 29 90 again on the 31st. Tho temperature during the month was very high, registering upwards of SO degrees on 16 days, and reaching as high as 90 degrees on the 20tb. Toe mean temperature at 9.30 a. m was 68 00 the maximum 76-70, and the minimum 50 61. The corresponding means for January, 1896, were 63-35, 7261, and 53 03. I am, &c, S<tML. GOODBEHEUE.
