The Wool Market
o The London agent of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency re* ports as under, dated January 19th, 1897 :— The sales opened this day nt an average decline of about 5 per cunt on last sales' closing rates, except the crossbred market, which is easier. Attend* anco of both Home and foreign buyers is good. Competition by both Home and foreign buyers is fairly active. There is a want of confidence in the bidding. The total quantity available, including wool held over from last series, is 358,500 bales, 95,000 bales of which have been forwarded to the manufacturing districts direct.
Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. have received the following cablegram from their London House, Messrs Sanderson, Murray, and Co., dated 19th inst. : — " The wool sales have opened with moderate competition, bet the market is very irregular. Merino on the average has declined 5 to 7£ per cent, and crossbred 2£ to 5 per cent. Scoured combing merino, extra good, shows the least decline."
