(Per Press Association.) Auckland, Jan. 20. Mr David Craig, actiug general manager of the N.Z. Insurance Company for some months past, has beeu ap pointed general manager of the company. He proceeds to Duuf.-din to attend the conference of the N.Z. Fire Underwriters Association. The gunboat Nautilus left to-night with McGregor to meet the Kai Ora, signalled oil Cape Maria Van Diemen, and tow her into port. She is out from Glasgow seven months aud two days. Marcus McDowall was charged with having in his possession If>4-1 cigars on which no duty had been paid. Defendant pleaded guilty aud was rived X'4s and £3 17s costs or six months' imprisonment. New Plymouth, Jan. 20. The Chamber of Commerce decided to urge the Government to find an adequate amount for the expenses of sending the flax expert to Great Britain and America. Wellington, Jan. 19. The latest phase of the demands of the seamen, firemen and trimmers for an in crease of wages is that the Union Steam ■ ship Company finally replied to the Dun edm branch of the Seamen's Union to the effect that it cannot sec its way to grant the request. The necessary papers are now being prepared requesting the mediation of the Arbitration and Con* ciliation Board in the matter. About 2000 claims have been received under the Naval aud Military Act of last session, but tho commission has not yet beeu appointed. Invkucakgill, Jan. 19. An inquest was held yesterday ou the body of Joseph Fosbonder, an old settler at New River. It appeared that the man, who was 76, had had a quarrel with his wife, and struck her, marking her face severely. A sou alarmed the household, aud on goiny out a spltsh was heard in the river. Fosbeuder was found fioatiug face downwards. Ho was got out, carried home, and stripped, but died an hour later. The jury returned a verdict of death from shock.
