Carlson and White, the two men charged in the Te Kuiti stabbing episode, were taken up to to the Hamilton Hospital to-day to be present at the taking of the depositions of Bain, the man stabbed, as he is not expected to recover. Rain set in yesterday, a third of an inch falling. The 1897 examination of junior and senior civil service candidates concluded to-day. The total number of candidates were 355. J. H. Smith has been arrested at Adelaide at the instance of the Charitable Aid Board on the charge of desert* ing his five children. A constable leaves by the Waihora to bring him to Auck land. This is the first of similar cases the Board intends to deal with. Dunedin, January 15. A woman appeared in Court to day who spent 11 months and five days of the last year in gaol, having been convicted 15 times for drunkenness. She starts this year with a sentence of two ' months. At the inquost on the young woman Jane Lindsay McCorkindale, whose body was found at the foot of the cliffs near St Clair, the medical evidence attributed the despondency, to which deceased had been subject to for some time, to the effects of influenza. The skull was fractured and it could not be said how she came by her death. A verdict of found dead was returned. This Day. Lord Glasgow leaves at midnight for Akaroa. Stays at Cbristchurch tor ten days and leaves for England from Sydney by the China on February 15th. Lady Glasgow is much improved in health. Hia Excellency speaks in the highest term? of the Tutanekai. Hawkra, January 15. Dr Reed, who is leaving for Palmerston North, was last evening entertained at supper and presented with an illuminated address and a pieoe of plate. The Manaia, which went ashore at Oeo on Thursday, is a complete wreck. Wellington, January 15. Several years ago the formation of a park on the hill above the Terrace was begun by way of relief for the unemployed, and some thousands have been subscribed by the public from time to time. The work has been kept going continuously ever since, but is now stopped, partly because no more money is forthcoming, and partly because the number of men has been so greatly decreased that tho work is not economical. It will require some thousands more to finish. Herbert Allandale was committed for trial on two charges of burglary and one af having burglars' tools in his possession. The Exhibition will bo closed on February 3rd with appropriate ceremony. This Day. Mrs Hoggard, a very old resident in Wellington, died to day. ' '
