"Spotting" the Land.

At the last meeting of the Wellington Land Board, the Commissioner (Mr Marchant) directed the attention of the Board to the bad system that had crept up in connection with the sale of unsurveyed land. Selectors had been al lowed to " spot " the best portions of the land open, with the result in some cases that rough pieces at the back, unsuitable for settlement, were left in the hands of the Crown. To remedy that Mr Marchant suggested that a back line should be defined, from which selectors would have to commence their bouadaries, and thus obviate the difficulty that had arisen. The Board adopted the suggestion, and the course advocated will be followed in tbe future. — Standard.
