Although over-speculation and dealing in "wild cat" mines during the year now closed bad a disastrous effect on many rash individuals who ,'M-ely a^Luhled in stocks, the out'ck for the legitimate mines is not .y any means discouraging. The Mining Standard, winch may be accepted ,8 an authority on the subject, in a ocent article on the history of the Auckland goldfaelds during the year just closed, says : " The New Year will open most auspiciously for us, and -md the future seems all that could be •ashed for. The recent temporary . ■(ii-f>s-sion is, if anything, of advant ■.-!•. for ir enables 'us to estimate the actual value of our assets, and shows us the firm foundation on which we stand. We know now that our resources will stand almost any strain, rhat our credit as a gold-producing colony is not dependent on the varinions of the market, but that it rests on a more solid basis — namely, the proved richness of our gold deposits. Our claim to wealth is not represented by paper, but by actual bullion, already ■inearthed and to coin*-. We say again that New Zealand may look forward to a prosperous New Year." This is very encouraging, and we hope the anticipations of our contemporary will he realized to th* nt.nioat.
