Feilding Athletic Sports.
v TWENTY FIRST ANNUAL GATHERING. The twenty- first annual meeting of the Feilding Athletic Sports was held on the Oval on Saturday last, Boxing Day, when there was au attendance of about 2500 persons, including children. The attendance would probably have been much larger but for the cloudy and threatening nature of the weather, which fortunately remained fine throughout the day. Everything passed off successfully without a hitch or protest of any kind and the result reflects great credit on the administration of the committee. All matters of detail had been attended to by the efficient secretary, Mr H. L. Sherwill, who was kept very busy I during the day, and who was ably assisted by Mr W G Haybittle, the treasurer, in his arduous duties. Tbe director of the Sports, Mr W A L Bailey, saw that the events were got off promptly to time, while Mr Hartgill. assisted by Mr P Thomson, filled his old position us starter, getting the men away well together in the several events. The various other officials were : — Committee -C Bray, E H Fisher, J Coombe, B Gos ling, E Goodbehere, T H James, F V Lethbridge, G Kirton, C. Bray (junr), W Reid, G Saywell, J Scott, P Thomson, H Worsfold, R Whisker, H Woolven ; timekeepers, Messrs G W Fowles and J Scott ; judges running, walking and eye ling eveuts, Walter A L Bailey, E Goodbehere, G H Saywell and R H Whisker : judges jumping events, B Gosling and T H. James- Although several of the events were closely contested, the decisions of the judges were accepted without a murruer and gave general satisfaction. Notwithstanding tbe fact tbat Mr Copeland's handicapping was adversely criticised in some quarters the " certainties " did aot all win, while in all tbe events the acceptances were good aud the finishes were very close in almost every race. The cycling events were handicapped by Mr E H Fisher and were won by F. Hunt, of Marton, from scratch. Hunt's wins were very popular and bis riding was mucb admired and, although when the handicaps were first issued, it looked as though he had a difficult task set him in eacb of the three events, particularly tbe mile, it was very evident that be has wonder, fully improved during the past year from the comparatively easy manner in which be disposed of bis opponents. The mile race was won by F. Mullin from the 10yds mark in the fast time of 4__io 35secs. In the 440 yards amateur race A. H. Holder, of Wanganui, gave a good exhibition of his pace, doing the distance in 52secs from scratch. The Feilding Brass Band, under the conductorship of Mr R F Haybittle, discoursed sweet music during the day, thus assisting to enliven tbe proeeodincß. Tbe refreshment booths were under the care of Mr Joseph Smith both m tbe law o and in tbe outside paddock.
