(Per Press Association.) Auckland, Dec. 21. A man named Kenneth Bain has been admitted into the Waikato Hospital from Te Kuiti suffering from a stab in the back inflicted by a knife. Two Germans have been arrested on suspicion of stabbing and otherwise assaulting Bain, who lies in a critical condition. Mrs Johnstone, of thn Waikato Heads, was drowned while bathing with her husband. She got out of her depth, but was rescued, and died almost immediately. Fifty Austrians arrived by tbe Rotomahana for the Northern gumflelds. David Veale, aged 18, was sentenced to a month's imprisonment without the option of a fine for beating a girl named Millicent Craig. Wilfred Adameon, aged nine, has died from the kick of a horse. Picton, Dec. 20. The programme arranged for the Picton regatta on New Year's Day iacludes junior outrigged fours, senior fours and pair oars. Mastebton, Dec. 20. A man named Robert Thompson was found dead on the Blairlogie Station last night. An inquest will be held. Thames, Dec. 21, A girl named Catherine Smith, 18 years of age was heating turpentine over an Aurora stove when some of the turpentine spilt, and flames bursting out of the lamp caught her dress, causing injuries from which she died. Wellington, Dec. 21. The Governor, Lady Glasgow and party left for Picton in the Government steamer Tutnnekai tbis afternoon. The movements of tbe steamer are uncertain but it is expected tbe party will be absent about three weeks. Christchurch, Dec. 21. Some excitement bas been occasioned in the northern district by a petition to have the local option poll in the Kaiapoi electorate declared void on occount of alleged irregularities. Many of those who signed tbe petition now declare that they were unaware of its nature, believing tbat it was simply a request for a recount of votes. !
