The Petone Murder.
(Per Press Association ) Wellington, Dec. 13. Now that the election fever has somewhat abated, the public are beginning to recollect the foal double murder committed in Petone, and connnem on the fact that hitherto tbe police have failed to sheet home the charge of murder upon the perpetrator.. This is a grave charge to lay against the police, and it is remembered that it is now three and a half months since Mr and Mrs Jones were foully done to death. In Petone tbe original efforts of the police to discover clues are, rightly or wrongly, regarded as ludicrous, and the continued apparent inaction of the Force compels many to believe that tbe police have failed. It ie satisfactory to know, however, that pio» bably within a fortnight steps will be taken to lay a charge ot murder against a prisoner at present in custody. A material witness is in delicate health, daily expecting to be confined, and until she is sufficiently recovered to give her testimony tbe bands of the police are tied. I We are *ttoart>A tbat as soon as that evidence can be given the information referred to will be laid. —Post.
