New books and periodicals, ex Rimu taka, have just arrived at J. S. Milson's. The concert in aid of tho Cheltenham Hall piano fund has been postponed to tbe 16th inst. The subjects for the Rev. Mr Stubb s sermons in the Presbyteriau Church to morrow are advertised to-day. A garden party and tea in connection with the Young Men and Boys' Club will be held on Wednesday nexfc, De cember 9, in Turner's paddock, atthe bottom of Kimbolton road. John Cobbe has an immense assort ment of fashionable blouse prints in black and wbite stripes and assort 3d mixtures, also printed, spotted and plain white and striped muslins. A rumor was circulated in town last; night that the excitement of the election in Christsburch bad created a free fight. and that three men were killed. The rumor was entirely without foundation. Darling, the cricketer, seems to have paralysed the Wellington people by his great drives, and he astonished the Yankees also by bis powerful hitting. The Philadelphia Evening Item, in its report of the cricket match between the Australian Eleven and the Gentlemen of Philadelphia, says:— 'Two white spots high up on the roof of the main club house show where Darling frae tured the tiles by his tremendous drives.' Tho Post says the police havo reason to believe tbat the missing knife, which they hold to be an important link iv the evidence now being got together against the person suspected of the Petone tragedy, was thrown into th© harbor from the Gear Company's wharf at j Petone. During the past few days they have been engaged in dragging ihe neighbourhood of tbe wharf, but, so far, without the desired result. Mr Anyon (chairman) and Mr Macin* tyre (bead master) were in Feilding today purchasing books from Mr Carthew for prizes for the children attending the Birmingham State School, which will be presented at the concert on the evening of Friday, December 18. The annual picnic will be held on the same day on tbe cricket ground and everyone is invited to attend. Tbe concert promises to be a great success and the tickets are selling weli. A considerable amount of interest wa3 taken in Feilding last evening in tbe result of the elections, and tbe street in front of the Star Office was crowded witb people who were anxiously awaiting tbe results, which were posted up as tbey came to hand. The usual amount of flour, over- ripe eggS and a stray dead rat or two were occasionally distributed amongst the anxious throng to assist in keeping up the excitement. The Hon.
