Our Butter and Cheese Industry.
SOME INTERESTING FACTS. Thft great development which has taken place in New Zealand of recent years in connection with the butter and cheese industry is shown by some figures which the Registrar-General (Mr Von Dadeleeen) haa placed at our disposal. In 1886 there were only 36 butter and cheese factories, employing 110 hands, and producing 274,6171bs of butter valued L 1649, and 823 tons of cheese valued at L 40.543. In 1890 the number of factories had ins creased to 74, with 269 hands, end an annual production of 1,969,759 of butter valued at L 73.340, and 19,60 tons of cheese valued at L 68.710. Last year there were 170 factories, which employed 256 hands and produced the enormous quantity of 11,336,7761bs of butter valued at L 355.116, and 4323 tons of cheese valued at L 146,155. The value of all the products in the yeaua mentioned were as follows : - 1886, L 43.09 4; 1890, L 150.957 ; 1895, L 501.274. The wages paid last rear amounted to 1.40,157, as against L 14.928 in 1890. In 1886 the plant and buildings were valued at L 47.51 8; in 1890 the value was L 100.42 3; and last year the figures were L 233.006 —Post.
