Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1896. ENGLAND AND AMERICA.
The settlement of the dispute between Great Britain and the United States of America on the subject of the Venezuelan boundaries came at a most opportune moment. Of course the "jingoes" in the States claim that England was forced to comply with terms which were humiliating, but that is sheer nonsense hardly worth a moment's serious consideration. Lord Salisbury very gracefully gave Mr Cleveland, the President, much credit for the diplomatic skill the latter had displayed in dealing with the question, and a large majority of tbe Americans are much pleased with the implied compliment. The revival of trade and commerce between these two great nations must have a beneficial influence on air industries, and we in New Zealand will doubtless come in for a share of the good things by the new demand for ;wool which has become evident since the Presidential election was decided. Any combination between the English and the Americans idds to the material, moral, aud political power of each people, or, to put it in oth<s«? words, jointly and sever- , ally. It has bbtoi* arranged that in
uture all points of difference are to be ettled by a Court of Arbitration, rhich will put an effectual bar to the o ingoea of either nation making insane c md cruel efforts to provoke a war.
