C.J.C. SPRING MEETING.

LADY ZETLAND WINS THE N.Z. CUP. j (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, Nov. 9. The weather was fine for the first day's racing of the C.J. C. Spring Meeting to-day. The attendance was large and the sum of £18,649 put through the totalisator forms a record for Canterbury. Results: — Spring Handicap Hurdles, 2 miles — Social Pest 1, Belmont 2, Ilex 3. Won easily by a length. Time, 3min 52 1-5 sec. Dividend, £2 18s. Maiden Plate, 1 mile —Uniform 1, Plotter 2, Tntanckai 3. Won by two lengths. Dividend, £1 15s 6d. New Zealand Cup, of 1500 soys; 2 miles—Lady Zetland 1, Euroclydon 2, Defiance 3. Also ran -Fabulist, The Possible, Mahaki, Ngatuere, Culverin, The Shrew, Quiltiri, Casket, Bellicent, Lotion, Captive, Black and Red, Epaulet, Voltigeur. Defiance was quickest on his legs, but was immediately supplanted by Bellicent, Mahaki and The Possible, and in this order they ran on to tho course proper. At tbe Kennels Mahaki was in command with Defiance next, but Culverin had lost, her position, and Epaulet, Bellicent, Fabulist aud Euroclydon were moving up. Once fairly in the straight Euroclydon caught Defiance, and The Possible and Lady Zetland moved up closer to the leaders, while Epaulet aud Quiltiri were still struggling on in front of the others. At the distance Euroclydon had shaken off Defiance and had successfully resisted a challenge from The Possible, but Lady Zetland, coming with a strong run, got her head in front opposite the outside stand, and going on won by three-quart-ers of a length from Euroclydon, with Defiance two lengths away third, a neck in front of The Possible, Quiltiri fifth, Epaulet sixth, Fabulist seventh, The Shrew eighth, Ca.ket ninth, Voltigeur tenth, Lotion eleventh, and Black and Red and Culverin the last two. Ngatuere fell dead at the distance. Time, Hmiu 30 2-5 sec. Dividend, £9 2s. Riccarton Welter Handicap, 6 furlongs —Cannonshot 1, Arquebus 2, Jewel 3. Won easily by two lengths. Time, lmin 17scc. Dividend, £6 2s. Welcome Stakes, 4 furlongs—Sir Launcelot and Multiform dead heat; Multiform 3. Time, 49sec. Dividends, Multiform £1 10s 6d, Sir Launcelot £1 ls. Stewards' Handicap, 6 furlongs— Vauilla 1, Cannonshot 2, Marlin 3. Won hy a length. Time, lmin 16 4 ssec. Dividend, £18 3s Gd. Shorts' Selling Race, 4 furlongs — Venom 1, Wedlock 3, Erringtou 3. Won by a short head. Time, 49._scc. Dividend, £18 3s Gd.

(Per (Ye-s .v-sociaiion.) Christchurch, This Day. Mr Pollard of the Opera Company, presented the rider of Lady Zetland with a gold mounted whip, aud his wife with a cheque for £100. Mr Pollard and his brother landed a good stake over the mare's win.
