The number of electors who elected the President of the United States in the recent contest was 447, being equal to the total of representatives and senators to which each of the States is entitled. Each State is entitled to two senators, and two representatives in proportion to population. On the basis of the last census the proportion of representatives is one in every 153,900 of tho population. This gives 357 representatives and 90 senators. Consequently Major McKinley would have won had he only received 224 votes, The popular vote for President in 1892 was 12,100,000, or at the rate of slightly under one in five of the population. In the latest struggle the popular vote will probably prove to have been close upon 13,000,000.
