THE MELBOURNE CUP RACE.

SOME PARTICULARS. (Per Press Association.) Sydney, November 4. Newhaven's win was proclaimed by the united voice of the crowd. It is estimated that between 60,000 and 70,000 people were present. A wild scene of excitement was witnessed, and a prolonged outburst of delirious cheering took place as the favorite passed the winning post, such as has seldom been surpassed. It was a long time before the seething excitement subsided. The horse's most excited admirers followed up the winner to the bird cage and relieved him of no small portion of his tail, but they were cautioned or they might have taken the lot. The favorite entered the straight with the question settled, while the leading lot that followed got on closer terms. Enthusiastic bursts of applause broke forth again and again as Newhaven turned the home corner and turned up the straight with Gardiner sitting still as a statue, and without use of either whip or spur, won the Melbourne Cup of 1896 in a canter by eleven lengths. Gardiner, who was determined not to throw away auy chance, said he nevor saw a flash of silk after he took the favorite to the front, and could only hear the thundering of the mighty cavalcade following. Never once had he to call upon bis colt to race. Newhaveo could easily have broken all records. It is the intention of his owners to send him to England.
