The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette Published Daily. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1896. Local and General News.

There was ft smart gale from the N.W. last night, but no damage has been reported. Owing to pressure on our space several letters to the Editor are unavoidably held over. The next meeting of the Pohangina Connty Council will be held on Wednes* day November 25'h. Mr D. Sinclair commenced his duties M Engineer to the Pobangina County Council yesterday. Mr J. B. Beokley, of Sherborne house, has some very interesting notices in oar wanted column to-day. If you keep a dog dont do any barking yourself. If you do, when you want the dog to bark it will be " dumb." Mr Pirani, M.H.R., for Palmerston N., has done much good work in the direction of helping tbe up country settlers, and the Pohangina County Council, in a most commendable spirit, at their meeting yesterday, passed a kindly worded resolution thanking Mr Pirani for his valuable assistance.

Sir Maurice O'Rorke, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has decided to retire from political life. Captain Edwin wired at noon to-day : — N W. to W. and S. gale with glass rising and much colder weather. After the banquet in connection with the opening of the Apiti bridge, tbe Premier will address a public meeting in Mr Guy's Hall, Apiti. The'Pohangina County Council office will be* open, for the future, every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., except public holidays and Thursday afternoens. j The bike thieves are becoming bolder every day. In Wellington one was stolen from a journalist. After that no machine may be considered safe. Cable head-lines from a New South Wales country newspaper : — " Revival of Armenianism." " The Fenians slaughtering the Turks." " Arrest of Tynan, the Sultan." Tbe Rev J. Cocker will preach to-mor-row in the Primitive Methodist Church taking as his subject in the evening, •• Herodias and Salome." Strangers are specially invited. Mr R. W. Brown invites the ratepay' ers of the Mangaone riding, Pohangina County, to attend a meeting in the Town Hall, Pohangina, on Saturday the 24th inst., to discuss matters in connection with the riding. We regret to learn that Colonel Gorton has not quite recovered from his recent severe illness. It appears that with characteristic energy he went to work too soon, with the result that he has suffered a slight relapse. The services and preachers at the Wesleyan Church to-morrow are advertised in another column. Mr Jas Wood will occupy the pulpit at the morning service and Rev S. H. D. Perryman, of Birmingham, in the evening. On Tuesday Mr Scott, engineer, and Captain Turner, inspected the Apiti bridge and passed tbe work. Every part was finished on Wednesday. Captain Turner expressed his satisfaction at the manner in which the work had been carried out. Entries for Messrs Abraham and Williams' Palruerston North sale are advertised to-day. Our readers will observe that owing to the A. and P. Show being held in Palmerston on the 29th inst, the sale of the firm for that week will be held on Friday tbe 30th inst. Messrs Spence and Spence cater with equal success for male attire as for household drapery and feminine fashions. Boys', youths' and men's clothing and mercery of every description suitable for summer wear are now being shown in great profusion at the Bon Marche. The splendid exhibition of magic lantern pictures of English and New Zealand scenery given by Mr Friberg, of Colyton, last evening at the Y.M,B.C. rooms, was witnessed by between 50 and 60 members and friends and seemed to give great pleasure and satisfaction. At a meeting of the Geraldine Farmers' Club a resolution was carried that in the interest of farmers and settlers the time has arrived when public borrowing for public works should cease for a season, and until the value of our exports through which we pay the interest upon our loans, has increased. The annual social gathering in connection with St John's Church will be held in the Assembly Rooms on Wednesday next. Besides the pincushion competition there will be tableaux yivants and character songs. Refreshments will be banded round during the evening and these ladies who have promised provi sions are requested to send them to the Hall on Wednesday afternoon. The following, taken from a Home paper, will considerably astonish Lord Glasgow and the members of his household :— Lord Glasgow's reign in Ne^ Zealand has been by no means enjoyable. He was nearly shipwrecked at the start, he was subsequently tossed by a prize bull at an agricultural show, and in the hunting field one of his daughters met with an accident that resulted in the amputation of a leg. Says Bishop Julius, of Cbristchurch : — " Much as I admire the earnestness of the prohibitionists and respect their motive, I cannot deny the liberty of conscience, and the right of any man, except a drunkard, to take alcchol in moderation if he choses to do so ; secondly, because, to quote the words of a great authority, " I feel that whenever you put the law in force on this subject you must have the moral sentiment of the people to sustain it." A return furnished by the RegistrarGeneral shows the number of public libraries, mechanics' institutes, and other literary and scientific institutions in the Colony, as well as the number of members and number of books. The institutions total 304, members, 17,638 ; books. 409,604. The building are apportioned as follows : — Auckland, 75 ; Taranaki, 6 ; Hawke's Bay, 17 : Wellington, 21 ; Marlborough, 5 ; Nelson, 25 ; Westland, 7 ; Canterbury, 73 ; Otago, 75. Those about to visit the Wellington Exhibition should retain their orders until then, when a visit to the show room of F. J. Pinny, 7, Manners street, Wellington, will reveal a secret yet unknown. The wonderful reductions in the prices of pianos, organs and musical instruments during next three months will defy competition. Mr Pinny has made special arrangements with the manufacturers of some of the leading makers of the age and is determined to keep up the reputation for a superior article. Mr Pinny has a very large selection and his patrons are guaranteed satisfaction and good value. The Pohangina County Council as at present constituted hold their last meeting yesterday, and the annual election of the Councillors will be held on November 11th. Ratepayers seem to be taking a lively interest in the election and up to the present the following candidates are announced for the various ridings : — Awahou riding — Messrs H. Dicken (present member) and Kerrigan ; Pohangina riding — Messrs C. Selby and A. A. Wagstaff (present members) and Bolton ; Tamaki riding— Messrs H. Fraser (present member) and Gorringe ; Mangaone riding -M«ssrsß W.BrownandE, T. Harrison ; Umutoi riding — Messrs Currie and Gawler. It is probable that Mr W. Vicary will be re-elected unopposed for Maneapikopiko riding, and that Mr W. Ashworth will be returned unopposed for the Coal Creek riding, Mr E. Bell, the present member, haying decided owing to private affairs not to seek re-election. Mr R. W. Brown will address the ratepayers of his riding in the Pohangina Hall at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday the 24th inst, and on the same date, at 7.30 p.m. Mr Wagstaff, who at present represents the Umntoi riding, will address the ratepayers of tbe Pohangina riding in the Hall. Mr Fraser will address the ratepayers in his riding on the 31st inst. and Mr Vicary the Mangapikopiko ratepayers on November 6.
