The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette Published Daily. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1896. REGISTER.

♦ Now that the general elections are k near, and the time so limited for thost electors who am not already on the i rolls, or who have changed thuir residences or qualifications, we would urge on every person interested to register -at once, and not only that to see that tbeir friends have done so likewise Times out of number people have presented themselves at the polling booths to record their votes, only to be told by the Returning Officer, or his Deputy, " Your name is not on the roll." In each and every case the disappointment has been keen, all the more so, perhaps, because in such cases the person has only him or herself to blame. The issues to be fought out in the coming contest are of such great importance, not only from a moral but from a political point of view, that it behoves everyone to be prepared to take a part therein. It is an unfortu- | nato circumstance that during the j most bitterly contested election, an unaccountably large proportion of electors fail or neglect to exercise the franchise, and thus practically die franchise themselves. The existence of such individuals makes it all the more obligatory on those who recog nise that candidates represent an abstract principle quite as much as they do a political party supposed to be the embodiment of a concrete principle, to

take active parts in placing " in author- 1 ity over them " such representatives as wiU best enunciate and carry out the principle they promise to endeavor to j carrj out. Wnat we wish to convey is this, that it is the bounden duty of every qualified person to be enrolled as an elector, and to exercise this privilege of assisting in the affairs of the colony without fear or favor, but with the main object of doing good to his fellows as well as conserve his own personal interests.
