Volunteer Items.
The opening of the shooting season was celebrated yesterday afternoon, when a match between the married and single members of the corps took place. The bachelors proved too strong for their opponents, and won by 40 points. The high wind blowing was not conducive to good shooting. Captain Kirton opened the season by firing the first shot and registered an nndeniable ball's eye. Owing to the wind only two ranges were fired. Following are the scores : — Single Men.
I The company parade of the Manchester Rifles, called for this evening, has been postponed. The Rangitikei Rifles defeated the Paltnerston liifle«, at Palmerston yesterday by 55 points. The conditions were seven men aside, seven shots each at 200 and 300 yards. The Rangitikei Rifles made 343 and the Palmerston Rifles 288.
