The members of the Manchester Rifles are reminded of the Government Parade this evening. With reference to the last military appointment in New Zealand, the World ■ays:"! be appointment of Command ant to tbe local forces which taaß been given to Major Penton. Royal Artillery, is * coujparatively rn-w one created by tbe Government of the colony. The Day has been fixed at LIOOO, and Major Penton's services are lent under the usual conditions. Those who know the officer will recognise tbe wisdom of tbe choice that has been made. Be is essentially a scientific gunner, and has earned for himself the full confidence of his superiors in whatever position he has been employed." Sergeant Joseph Vizzard, an ex police officer died at West Maitlaod recently. He served through tbe Crimean War with the Grenadier Guards. A Greymouth volunteer, who neglected to pay fines to his company, was arrested the other day. He found the money and was released.
