THE OTHER SIDE.
TO THE EDITOK. Sir, — A few days ago you gave part of an address by a clergyman in Portland, Maine, showing up the failure of Prohibition in that city. Will you kiudly allow a testimony for the other side, from a very unlikely source, to appear in your columns? The New Yorrk World, which is well-known to be opposed to Prohibition, in a recent article on the Raines Law, which proposes to close liquor ships within a certain radius of public schools, speaks as follows : - " Time was when in that state (Maine) a man could obtain a glass of liquor afc leisure. Now, how changed ! Nowhere within the borders of the easternmost commonwealth is a drop of ardent spirits or malt liquor to be had. Not even in the hidden recesses of hotel bars, or the mysterious bottled precincts of the drag store, can aught unlawful be found to gratify the thirsty man." After more of the same sort, it goes on to say, " This absolute triumph of Prohibition is what the opponents of the Raines Law dis» cern in the future as menacing New York." Now, sir, I think it is very remarkable, that those who find fault witn Prohibition, don't or can't bring forward anything which promises to be as effective in counteracting the evils of drink. It neither requires cleverness nor wisdom to find fault. I am, etc., Safe Side.
