The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette Published Daily. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER, 7, 1896. THE SINS OF SYNDICATES.
A great fuss has been made over the fact of foreign syndicates purchasing mining properties in New Zealand but we find from the Kumara Times that, it is not an unalloyed blessing. In Keefton the taking over of the various mines by the Ziman syndicate has made no improve/Dent in the ordinary u.-inesis of tde place. No more men an; being employed, while those employed are receiving a iower rate of pay. There is litt cor nothing doing in the scrip market, although that is no jiieat matter to complain of. Upon the whole everything is quieter in Reefton than it used to be. For the next twelve months no work will be done in the mines except opening out new levels and otherwise prospecting the properties, and the results of such prospecting will be specially the property of the syndicate which is an especiilly sore point among miners who are <; shepherding " adjacent country. One contemporary concludes by saying : — " We have ihe utmost confidence in the mineral wealth of New Zealand, and will give a hearty welcome to companies that will honestly endeavour to develop our mines, but we object to our mines being made •' a cats paw to pull nuts out of the fire " for thosp who have no interest in New Zealand beyond what they can make by usinw it for their own ends. Ex ploiting our names is quite legitimate, but making use of them to exploit the pockets of the English and continental public is certainly not legitimate." It would appear from the above that the Reefton people have discovered that " You cannot eat your cake and have it too." __ - __^___
