A Slander Case.
(Per Press Association). Dunedin, October 6. In the Supreme Court, the slander case, Clarke v. Taylor was tried to-day. In this case Clarke, a sn .reman claimed LSOO from Taylor for defamation of character. Both plaintiff and defendant had been in the employ of Sconler and Chiaholm for many yeare. In June laet money began to be missed from Mr Chisholm's private office, and a watch was set, Taylor being one of the watchers. One morning he told Chisholm that Clarke bad been in his office, the inuendo being that Clarke had taken the money which was missing. Taylor repeated the statement in Clarke's presence. An information was laid against Clarke, but after bearing the evtdnnce, the case was dismissed. The jury found unanimously that the plaintiff Clarke bad not been on the premises at the time the office was •ntered, but on the question whether the statement made was done so maliciously, three-fourtha found for defendant. Judgment was accordingly entered for defendant. = _ = - = -_-
