The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette Published Daily. TUESDAY, OCTOBER, 6, 1896. THE DIGNITY OF LABOR.

Thi: phrase which heads this article fin'.s no place in tbe minds of our al legpd Liberal Legislators. On the contrary they appear to have a pro found contempt for both the laborer and his work. Recent so called Labor Legislation has struck many deadly blows at the welfare of the workers under the flimsy pretence of protecting them. Avenues which were once open to the children of the industrious are now effectually closed, and 60 well known is that to members of the Upper House that when the Hon Mr Jennings said the only occupations open to Colonial youths were those of the burglar and the criminal he was not contradicted. He further said that when the Labor Bills Committee of the Council asked the Government to furnish them with a report made by Captain All man upon the facilities that should be given to our boys tor service in the mercantile navy, the Government had refused to furnish such information on the ground that the report was a confidential one, and was still under the consideration of the Cabinet. Another member said without fear of contradiction that the whole trend of shipping legislation for the last few years is designed to pre- , vent any New Zealand boy from get- \ ting employment on board ship. Those I who are behind the scenes more than 1 hint that most oi the silly legislation affecting our local shipping trade has been inspired directly and indirectly by persons who desire o injure a well known large shipping company which tms enormous interests at stake in the colony. It is to be hoped that daring

the coming contests at the general election some of the candidates will pledge themselves to endeavour to release the bonds of the working men, and restore to them a few of the liberties which have been taken away by our over zealous and therefore prejudiced law makers. j
