Cycling Carnival.
(Per Press Association.) Sydney, Oct. 8. The Cyclist Union Carnival, which has for its chief object the selection of the Australasian representatives to proceed to England began to-day. The three-mile test match was somewhat of a fiasco, as six out of the eight starters stopped, as they anticipated there would be a fresh start. Swenson, of Queensland, and Marsdeu, of Sydney, held on, but with the exception of Kerr, New South Wales champion, and Simpson, of New Zealand, the others left the track. Kerr and Simpson set out after the leaders, who had gained a good three parts of a lap start. The gap was soon reduced, and then a ding dong battle took place between Kerr and the New Zealander, who won by a couple of lengths. Time, 9min 25 l ; sth sees. Iu the Ilalf Mile Test Match only the heats were decided, and the final will decided on Monday. Simpson won his heat in liuin IB Both sees, while Kerr got a place in the second heat in lmin 19 2-sth sees. The Five Mile Test Match, which was a great race, was decided in the last two laps, wheu Kerr and Simpson, who had been watching one another, moved forward Simpson beat his opponent, but Goodson (Queensland) who rode with splendid judgment, kept his lead and won by a length. Time, 13min 41 4-sth sees. The chief position is to be decided by points, and u,t present the score stands thus — Simpson 5 points, Kerr 3, Goodson 3, Marsden 1. None of the New Zealand competitors were successful in the foot races.
