The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette Published Daily. Saturday, September 19. 1896. THOSE SINKING FUNDS.
Th absorption of the Local Bodies' Siukioi,' J^uuds by the Government does not meet the approval of the whole of the foUowcis of the latter. W hen the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act Amendment Bill was before the House an amendment was Uaovcd, lu«.viug for its object the pre vriition of the seizure of sinking funds iv future. The Premier, of course, opposed this, and declared that the carrying of such a motion would be a " slap in the face " for the Government. But the prospect of such a dire calamity happening only appeared to influence a few "jelly n'sh " liberals, therefore the motion was only lost on the casting vote of the chairman. Those who voted against the Govern merit included s-ixteen members of their own pa'ty, viz., Messrs, Buddo, Buick, Collins, Graham, W. Hutchison, Maslin, McNab, Montgomery, Morrison, Firani, fiaunders, <3. W. Russell, 'tanner, R. Thompson, G. J. Smith, and Miller, while Mr J. W. Kelly was momentarily absent from tne chamber, but subsequently votedin the sanif direction. Fortunately for the Government, only 69 voted ; of the other five Messrs Mctiuire, J. W. Kelly, Bell and G. Hutchison, were in favor of the motion, while the Speaker was away indisposed. So that there was actually v majority of four in the House against the Government. This is the second hard knock tho Government has received within the last few ays.
