The Banking Enquiry.
(Per Press Association) Wellington, September 16. Mr Butt supplied the information that the amount written off on the Bank of New Zealand's current business for 1896 was about £3000, some of wbicn bad since been recovered. The Bank had taken 131 out of 169 of the Colonial Bank's officers into its employ. Examined by the Hon Mr McKenzie, witness said he bad never made a statement at the Wellington Club that the Government was a contemptible, disreruptable crowd. The managers in Otago had reported the present enquiry was causing loss of business to the Bank. Witness could not disclose the names of those who had benefited by the Bank's loss of over four million pounds. This Day. The Banking Committee resumed at 11 o'clock. Mr W. G. Foster, General Manager of the Assets Realisation Board was examined by the Premier. He stated bofore taking this position he had made an examination of the Bank of New Zealand Estates Company and found that financially the properties were not being worked to the best pecuniary advantage. The Estates Company would require to earn £95,000 yearly in order to pay its way. At present it was not paying its way. _«««____»__
