DEFEAT OF THE JAPANESE. (Per Press Association.) Sydney, This Day. The repression of the Formosan rebellion is having a disastrous effect on the Island. The flourishing towns of Chipchip and Hoonin are completely deserted, the people having fled to the hills for safety. It is estimated that 40,000 of the Chinese driven from their homes are camped in the open. Half of them are utterly destitute. Four hundred of the Japanese army attacked a brigand chief's stronghold, bnt bad to retreat with a loss of 200 killed.
