Matson found Guilty of Manslaughter.
SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS* IMPRISONMENT. (Per Press Association.) Dxjnedin, Sept. 4. The trial casd of Matson charged with the murder of Mary Matson, his wife, was concluded to-day. The jury retired at 5 p.m. and at 6 p.m. returned with a verdict of manslaugmer. Judge Williams deferred passing sentence till morning. _ This Day. Mr Solomon asked for a mitigation of the sentence on the ground the verdict ot the jury expressly excluded the notion the body of the woman was put » nt ° *°* river except for purposes of ™*™ m ™°* after the result of a blow struck during »n unpremeditated quarrel. He aiso asked the court to draw an *^°&J* B tween the present case and MuUaneys in which four montn's imprisonment was given for an assault committed with a more serious weapon, also in a quarrel which did end in death. The Judge said there was not the slightest analogy between the two case 3 M |teon's manslaughter was a kind of manslaughter very nearly approaching murder, and it would be quite out of the question to inflict any thin? but a, severe punishment. A sentence ot i<s years with hard labor was passed.
