The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette Published Daily. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1896. THE BOROUGH ELECTIONS.
Seeing that matters of great importance to the burgesses are likely to occupy the attention of the Borough Council during the next twelve months a very general feeling prevails among the ratepayers that the several candidates for the vacancies made by the retirement of three councillors, should take an early opportunity of giving public expression of their views on municipal aifciirs, as they now exist, and what are their intentions in that connection, for the future. It is a very excellent custom that of candidstes taking the electors into their confidence, but one which has fallen into abeyance in Feilding, possibly for the reason that candidates for municipal honors during late years have never been too numerous. Now, however, that the importance of the Borough has increased and is still increasing, it is only natural to expect a change tor the better will be observable, and the ambition excited of more of oar good and worthy citizens to serve their fellows as councillors. The fact of there being five candidates now in tbe field is ample proof of the correctness of this opinion. There is yery littic time to lose, and we would suggest tbatthe candidates call a meeting of the burgesses as soon before the poll a3 circumstances permit.
