Australian Cricketers in England
AUSTRALIANS v. SOMERSETSHIRE. (Per Press Association.) London, August 25. The Australians' first innings closed for 129, the chief scorers being Giffen 40, aod Don Dan 41. Hedley took 3 wickets for 50, and Robeon 6 for 22. Somersetshire, with a lead of 90 on their first innings, began their second innings, but found the wicket treacherous, and when the stumps were drawn for the day had lose six of their most valuable wickets for 41. On resuming the match today the wicket was playing easily, but the drying sun and wind quickly changed affairs, and rendered batting difficult. Darling was bowled the second ball, and Iredale lout his wicket with the score at 17. Giffen and Donnan were the only members of tbe team who made a stand, and both played very steadily. The former's innings, however, was not without blemish, us he gave three chances, each of which, though, was very bard. Robson waa tried when the colonial score stood at 84, and the wicket suiting him, he brought about a collapse, four wickets falling for ten runs. Kelly and Trumble managed to raise the score sufficiently to save a follow on. In the Home team's second innings, L. Palairet was dismissed by MoKibben before a run was scored, and three other batstnen were out when the total stood at one. Wood and Robson then became associated and carried the total up to 27, when both were dismissed. Cballen and Hill playod cautiously, and were at the wickets when the stumps were drawn. August 26. Owing to the continuous heavy rain, the Somersetshire match has been abandoned.
(Per Press Association.) Adelaide, This Day. Mr Creeswell, secretary of the Cricket Council, bus cabled to Mr Masgrove that the Council expects the team to return by the end of November. The courtesy of a reply is requested. Sydney, This Day. Commenting on Musgrove's cabled interview the Herald suggests the difficulty so far as the New Zealand tour is concerned could easily be pot ever by rearranging the dates of the intercolonial fixtures, playing the first match in Mcl- < bourne on Boxing Day, instead of in Adelaide on December 17, as at present arranged. Tbe Adelaide match could be re- fixed for New Year's Day, and thus give tbe team more time.
