The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette Published Daily. FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1896. BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

At the end of the current month it will be necessary for three burgesses to be nominated for the position of Borough Councillors to take the place of the same number who retire in ordinary course. As there is a probability of matters of considerable importance to the ratepayers being brought forward within the next twelve months, it behoves the latter to select the very best men available, so that whatever may be attempted or done will be well done. There is a strong feeling prevailing that the vital question of drainage and water supply must no longer be left in abeyance. For ourselves we perfectly agree with those who are of such opinion, because the present and future health and welfare of the residents m this thriving and important township will largely depend upon such a scheme being formulated, adopted, and carried to a successful issue. At no time in the history of the colony has money been so plentiful and so cheap as it is at present. This was exemplified when the unlucky loan for electric lighting was in the market, which was subscribed for four-fold at very low rates of interest. We sincerely hope that tbe several candidates, whoever they may be, will let the ratepayers have a clear exposition of their ideas on this or any other subject involving the progress of the Borough, so that only the best of them, who have the most advanced ideas, may be chosen.
