In the House this afternoon when the Minister of Lands moved leave of absence for the member for Wallace | (Mr Macintosh) ou the ground of illhealth, Mr G. J. Smith moved to excise the last three words, which really meant the member in question would not receive honorarium while absent from the House. It was well known that Mr Macintosh has been indisposed most of the last two sessions, and was sent home in the Hinemoa the other day. Mr Hall-Jones strongly objected to the action of Mr Smith and Mr Ward followed suit, the former reading a certificate from Dr Cahill, stating Mr Macintosh was suffering frotr. political excitement, which was received with derision. The Premier arrived on the scene at this stage, and recognising the situation moved the adjournment of the debate, which was carried. The Abattoirs and Slaughter Houses Amendment Bill was read a second , time. The Wages Protection Bill was | taken iuto Committee but progress was reported on clause 3. The Government Advances to Settlers Act Amendment Bill was committed. Considerable discussion took place on clause 2, which provides that tixed loans may be granted on freehold security. Mr G. J. Smith moved that the amount of a fixed Joan should not exceed L 2500 to any one borrower. Lost by 26 to 3. Clause 6 which provides for the repeal of the Act as to suburban lands was retained by 32 to 13. Clause 18 which increases the maximum of advances under the Act from L 2500 to L 4009 was retained by „ 22 to 19. A new clause was added enabling natives to apply for loans under the Act.
