LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, August 18. The Legislative Council met at 2.30. The motion by the Hon. Mr Jones, that a Select Committee be set up to inquire and report as to the Bank of New Zealand pension fund,_ eighteen heads of inquiry being specified, was lost by 20 to 19. The Minister of Education moved the second reading of the Asiatic Restriction Bill. The Hons. Shrimski and McLean strongly opposed the measure and the Hon Mr Williamson moved to kill it. After further discussion, the Hon. Mr Ormond explained that the ground taken by the Council in rejecting the previous measure was that it was unconstitutional, a defect which was not in the present Bill. After further debate, the second reading was carried by 19 to 10. The division list was as follows :— Ayes (for the Bill 19)— Richardson, Baillie, Acland, Barnicoat, Arkwright, Kerr, Kelly, Rigg, Jones, Jenkinson, Reeves, Feidwick, Jennings, Kenny, Ormond, Bolt, Peacock, Montgomery, Walker. Noes (against the Bill 10) — Reynold**, Scotland, Swanson, Shrimski, Williams, Taiaroa, Bowan, Stevens, Holmes, McHii.rj.T_. At 4.45 p.m. the Council adjourned.
