About two months a»o Captain Black, of the steamer Obau, which struck a rock near Jackson's Head, was suspended for three months, the Governor, acting on the advice of Ministers, has remitted the unexpired portion of the suspension. The Premier states that no appoint ment to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr J. E. Fitzgerald, has yet been made. Christchurch, August 10. Kichard Georpe, aged 65, a painter, who lived by himself in Antigua street, was found dead in bed this morning. He is supposed to have died in a fit during the night. Dunedin, August 10. Mr Scobie Mackenzie is definitely out for the Port Chalmers seat at the gene raf election. If Mr J. A. Miller contests the seat Mr E. A. Allen, who contested the last election, will again be a candidate. The Dunedin Prohibition League, reelected last year's Executive officers and adopted the following resolution : — " That the League recognises the valuable points in the present Licensing Bill — the vote for colonial prohibition and bringing clubs under popular control, — but regrets the entire absence of any reference to a majority to rule, and the repeal of the clause requiring a half poll in uncontested elections. It expresses satisfaction that the amendments abolishing bottle licenses are on the Order Paper, and urges Parliament to complete this work before dissolving. William Robson, aged 59, died suddenly on Saturday. He was dressing himself when he was suddenly attacked by a pain in the throat and expired be fore medical assistance could arrive At the inquest a verdict was given iv accord with the medical evidence— that death was due to heart disease, probably accelerated by excessive use of alcohol.
