v Here is a pitiful story from Perth (W.A.) : — Ellen Benning, charged with attempted suicide, pleaded guilty. Pris oner appeared to have been in a bad state of health on the night she committed the attempt. She received bad news and had drunk a little. She was deserted by her husband and had for some time been trying to earn an honest livlihood for herself and two children Prisoner, who cried very bitterly, said her husband had been in this colony, but had deserted her for nine months and gone to Broken Hill, leaving her to earn her own and her children's livlihood. Evidence of her good character having been given, His Honor cautioned her against falling into drunken habits and warned her of the seriousness of her act. Prisoner, after hearing this, protested tearfully that she -would bohave herself in the future. Despite repeated discharges from His Honor, she called upon the little baby in her arms to say, " Thank you, sir." She at last became faint and was moved by a friend and one of the nshers from the Court.
